D'auria Surname in Italy

D'Auria is a surname rooted in southern Italy, with a particularly strong concentration in Campania and important branches in the Taranto area and in Sicily; smaller but still notable lines are also found in Piedmont and Lombardy. Its origin is most likely linked to the medieval personal name Auria, an old form sometimes connected with the Lombard world and ultimately traced back to the Latin Aurea. A toponymic origin is also plausible, since a place called Castrum Aurie is documented in the Genoese area in the early 14th century. The name Auria appears very early in southern records, and medieval attestations from the Nice area show forms such as de Auria. In Sardinia, D'Auria, Auria and Doria are often treated as variants of the same family stock, of Genoese origin, and historical Sardinian records sometimes use these surnames interchangeably. Overall, D'Auria is an ancient Italian surname whose history may combine a medieval personal name, a possible place-name origin and later family branches spread between Liguria, southern Italy and Sardinia.
