Origin notes
Origin and meaning
The surname Danna originates primarily in western Piedmont, especially around Monastero di Vasco in the Cuneo province, and in Luserna San Giovanni and Torino in the Turin area. Other family groups exist in Cavazzo Carnico in Udine, as well as in Rome, Viterbo, and Lucca Sicula in Agrigento. The name likely developed either from an apheretic form of the feminine version of Giordano or from the Frankish form 'Dannè' linked to Daniele. In Sicily, the surname may have evolved as a matronymic from 'd'Anna', losing the apostrophe and thus distinguishing it from related surnames like D'Anna.
