De Pasquale Surname in Italy

De Pasquale is a patronymic surname built on the personal name Pasquale, with De and Di marking belonging to, or descent from, an ancestor named Pasquale or Pascale. The underlying name is therefore Pasquale, in its older forms such as Pascali, Pascalis and related variants. In southern Italy these surnames were generally fixed between the 18th and 19th centuries; in some cases, southern branches may also reflect the Spanish surname Pascual or the Catalan Pasqual, introduced into Italy in several historical phases. Today De Pasquale is widely found across southern Italy, especially in Sicily, but it belongs to a broader onomastic family that includes closely connected variants such as De Pascale, De Pascalis, Di Pasquale, De Pascali, De Pascal, De Pasqual, De Pasquali, De Pasqualin, De Pasqualis and Di Pascale. Historical records also mention Pasquale, Pascale and Pascalis families in northern Italy, sometimes associated with prestige or nobility in areas such as Piedmont, Venice, Tuscany and Trentino; in the south, early branches are documented in the Cosenza area, with later developments in Puglia, Campania and Sicily.
