Di Tommaso Surname in Italy

The surname Di Tommaso is widespread across several regions in Italy, particularly in Lazio, Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, Puglia, Basilicata, and parts of Sicily including Augusta and Catania. It, along with related variants, originates from the medieval personal name Thomasus. Geographical distinctions among the variants are notable: De Tomasi appears in Lombardy around Samarate, Busto Arsizio, Gallarate, and Milan, as well as in the Vicenza area of Veneto; De Tommaso is rare and specifically linked to Turi in Puglia; De Tommasi is found in Puglia with concentrations in Novoli, Lecce, Salento, and the Bari area. Fe Tommaso is centered in Puglia’s Bari and Brindisi provinces, with minor presences in Naples, Cosenza, and Messina. Di Tomasi, nearly unique, likely stems from a misrecording of Di Tommasi and is concentrated in Sicily (Rosolini, Modica, Ragusa). Di Tomaso is present in Molise and Basilicata, with a strong cluster in Rotonda. The variant Ditommaso is extremely rare and localized between Foggia and Potenza. All these surnames share a common derivation from Thomasus but have evolved with distinct regional identities.
