Origin notes

Origin and meaning

The surname Marchi, widespread especially in northern Italy, belongs to a broad family of names derived from the Latin praenomen Marcus, either directly or through medieval diminutives and related forms such as Marchettus. From this same root come several related surnames, including Marchet, Marchetta, Marchetti, Marchetto, Marchini, Marcon, Marcone and Marconi, each with its own regional spread but a shared origin. Over time, these forms took root in different parts of the peninsula: some are typically Venetian, others Emilian or Tuscan, and some are found in central and southern Italy as well. The surname was already in use in the Middle Ages; one example is the composer and music theorist Marchettus Paduanus (1270-1335), while 17th-century records from Milan also attest the form Marchetto. Marchi in particular is strongly established in northern Italy.
