Origin notes
Origin and meaning
The surname Marini comes from the Latin cognomen Marinus or from the later medieval personal name Marino. It is widely spread across central and northern Italy and in Sardinia, with a very broad national distribution. Related forms help distinguish some branches: Marina is extremely rare and appears to have origins in the Ragusa area and perhaps the Genoa area; Marinacci has more than one branch, with an original one in the Perugia area and secondary branches in Lazio and Foggia; Marinaccio is typical of Foggia; Marinis is almost unique; Marino is very widespread throughout Italy, especially in the south-central regions; Marinoni is distinctly Lombard; Marinucci seems characteristic of Abruzzo, with significant presences also in Marche, Umbria, Lazio and the province of Campobasso.
For Marinoni, early records are especially old: an inscription dated 1216 in Lurago Marinone, in the ancient parish of San Giorgio, mentions a Giulio Marinoni described as a very noble man. The surname is also found in Desenzano in 1373 among the town notables, and even earlier, in 1175, in a document preserved in the Diplomatic Code of Lombardy. In some cases, the name may also be linked to the word marina, suggesting that the family seat was near the coast.
