Origin notes
Origin and meaning
The surname Moretti derives from the medieval Italian personal name Morus, with several variants formed from simple or compound diminutives. The form Moret is mostly found in the provinces of Treviso, Belluno, and Pordenone, also appearing in South Tyrol and Udine. Moretti is widespread throughout peninsular Italy. Morettini is typical of the central Italian regions of Marche and Umbria, while Morettino is almost exclusively southern. Moretto is very common in northern Italy, with established branches in the Roman and Latin areas, partly resulting from forced migrations linked to the reclamation of the Pontine Marshes, and also a presence in Brindisi. Morucci appears in areas around Livorno-Pisa and between Viterbo and Rome. The rare Moruccio is centered in central Italy. Moruzzi families are found in the provinces of Cremona, Piacenza, Parma, and Bologna, with a distinct Friulian presence especially around Pordenone. Moruzzo, extremely rare, is localized in Sarzana in the Spezia province. A 15th-century document from Erbusco (Brescia) mentions an ancestor called Moreto, underscoring the surname's longstanding roots in Lombardy.
