Origin notes
Origin and meaning
Ortu is a typically Sardinian surname and is especially common across the island. Its origin is straightforward: it comes from the Sardinian word ortu, meaning “garden,” from Latin hortus. As a family name, it probably identified someone who owned a garden, worked it, or sold its produce. The word is very old and is well documented in medieval Sardinian records, together with many place names built on Ortu/Orto. The surname is already found in medieval records, including the Peace of Eleonora of 1388, where forms such as Ortu de Acargio, Ortu Joanne and Ortu de Francisco appear; the Condaghe of San Nicola di Trullas also records the variant Orto, for example in Maria d’Orto. The surname therefore has a clear local Sardinian formation, born from a nickname linked to the island’s agricultural vocabulary.
