Origin notes
Origin and meaning
The surname Ottolini is mainly found in the provinces of Varese, Milan, Bergamo, Brescia, and Verona. It derives from a modification of the Franco-Longobard name Otolinus, which originates from the Germanic names Oddo or Oddonis. A 1163 document from Brescia, part of the Medieval Lombardy Diplomatic Codex, records the name with the phrase «Ego Otolinus qui dicitur Bocacius de Barbarano notarius antenticum». The rarer variant Ottola is associated with the Piacenza area, while Ottolia is found in Alessandria near the Ligurian border. Ottolina, also rare, is characteristic of the Milan area and north of Milan.
