Sansone Surname in Italy

The surname Sansone originates from the given name Sansone, documented as early as the 12th century. The variant Sanson is typical of the Veneto region, especially in the provinces of Vicenza and Treviso. Sansone is more widespread in central and southern Italy, with notable presences in Puglia, particularly in the provinces of Bari, Taranto, Brindisi, and Lecce. Sansonetti shows multiple lineages: in Rome, Civitavecchia, and Civita Castellana in Lazio; in the Teramo and Chieti provinces in Abruzzo; as well as in Castel di Sangro and some areas of Puglia. The very rare Sansonetto likely originated in Veneto but is probably just a variation of Sansone. The Sansoni variant is found in central and northern Italy and also stems from the name Sansone. In some cases, the surname may derive from toponyms such as Torre Sansone in the Chieti area. Historical documents attest the name Sansone from the 1100s, with surname usage recorded from the 14th to 16th centuries in regions like Tuscany and Umbria.
