Origin notes
Origin and meaning
Sechi, together with Secchi, belongs to a closely related surname group with very ancient medieval roots in Sardinia. The name is documented in early Sardinian records and condaghi in several spellings, including Seke, Secke, Sechie, Sekke, Seche, and later Sechi, Secchi and Sequi. This shows a long-established presence on the island, while medieval evidence from Genoa suggests that Ligurian connections may also have played a role in the spread or formation of the Sardinian branch, in connection with the Malaspina and later feudal ties to Sardinia. Linguistically, the surname does not have a single certain explanation, but the strongest interpretation links it to a nickname referring to the physical build of the first bearer, especially thinness or a lean appearance. In this sense, Sechi is part of an old Sardinian family of surnames whose original meaning was probably descriptive and nickname-based, even though several local etymological proposals exist.
