Origin notes

Origin and meaning

The surname Serra is found throughout Italy, with its strongest concentration in Sardinia and a particularly well-documented medieval presence. It may have more than one origin. In many cases it comes from the Latin serra, meaning “saw,” and likely began as a nickname linked to the work of a carpenter or sawyer. In Sardinia, however, Serra also has the meaning of “ridge,” “hill,” or “mountain range,” a sense that survives in local speech and place-names; in this context, the surname can point to someone who lived near or came from a place on a ridge or at a valley’s natural narrowing. Early forms such as De Serra clearly show this geographic origin. The name is documented very early, already in Pavia in 1282, and it appears frequently in Sardinian medieval records. In the judicial and monastic records, the De Serra are numerous and belong to leading families of the period, especially the Serra de Lacon line, one of the most powerful noble houses in medieval Sardinia.
