Silvestri Surname in Italy

The surname Silvestri originates from the Latin name Silvester, meaning “forest dweller” or “of the woods.” It is widespread across nearly all Italian regions and has a documented history dating back to the late 1400s in Livigno, where in 1784 there were about ten Silvestri family units. Silvestri is a pan-Italian surname distinct from related forms: Silvestre is primarily Neapolitan; Silvestrini originates around Padua, Venice, Emilia Romagna, Marche, Umbria, and Lazio; Silvestrino, very rare, seems tied to Naples; Silvestris is typical of Bari and Foggia; and Silvestro has roots both in Naples and in Sicily’s Messina area. The name is historically linked to Saint Silvester, bishop of Rome from 314 to 335, whose election as pope followed the death of Melchiades. The surname’s widespread use and ancient background reflect its strong cultural and geographic roots while maintaining clear differences among its variants.
