Simonelli Surname in Italy

The surname Simonelli, originating from the biblical name Simone, is primarily established in lower Lazio and Campania, with secondary roots along the coast between lower Liguria and upper Tuscany, as well as an area spanning Bergamo and Brescia. Simonelli differs from related variants such as Simoncelli, which appears around Pesaro, Forlì, Rome, and between lower Trentino and Brescia, and Simoncini, common across Forlì, Tuscany, Marche, Umbria, and upper Lazio. Many derivations from Simon emerge from diminutives of Simone, scattered throughout Italy: Simeone is found in Naples and Puglia; Simeoni in the Three Venetias and Lazio; Simon is characteristic of Veneto, especially in Venice and Treviso provinces; Simonazzi is typical in Mantua and Reggio Emilia; Simonetta shows main concentrations in Calabria and Lombardy; Simonetti is widespread nationwide; Simonetto is mostly Venetian. Historical records trace these related surnames back to the late 1500s, including Cardinal Hieronymus Simoncellus in Rome and university students in Umbria and Marche.
