Solinas Surname in Italy

Solinas is a distinctly Sardinian surname with very old roots in medieval records from the island. Its etymology is not certain, and several explanations have been proposed. It may be connected with the Sardinian word solina, whose exact meaning is not fully established, or it may derive from a nickname linked to living near salt pans or managing them. A Spanish origin has also been suggested, but the surname is documented in Sardinia in records that are at least two centuries earlier than the Catalan period of Alghero, which shows that it was already well established on the island in the Middle Ages.

The earliest records appear in several condaghes and in thirteenth-century documents, with forms such as Solina and Solinas. The surname occurs in many places in historic Sardinia, especially in the Sassari and Logudoro areas, and it is found among the signatories and witnesses of medieval acts concerning villages that are now vanished or renamed. There is also a deserted settlement called Solinas or Lobinas in the Gerrei area, which further confirms the long-standing historical presence of the name in Sardinia.

Over the centuries the surname has remained strongly concentrated in Sardinia, with a particularly significant presence in the Sassari and Alghero area. Its documentary history therefore points to a solid Sardinian root, while not entirely ruling out contacts with the Iberian world.
