Origin notes
Origin and meaning
Togni is a surname that is characteristically Lombard in origin. It derives from older forms of the personal name Antonio, shortened in dialectal speech to Togn and then expanded into different surnames through diminutive, augmentative and later Italianized variants. This same base gave rise to several related surnames spread across different parts of Italy. Togni is found mainly in Lombardy, with additional branches in Romagna, in the Ancona area, and between Modena and Lucca. Historical records show the surname at least from the late 15th century, with traces in Pontremoli, and in 1585 a Giovanni Francesco Togni is mentioned in a document written in Borgo di Terzo, in the Bergamo area.
