Origin notes

Origin and meaning

The surname Toma is predominantly found in the Apulia region of Italy, especially in the Salento area. It is also present in the Gargano region and parts of Tuscany around Carrara, as well as Piacenza. The related surname Tomacci, almost exclusive to the Potenza province, appears to originate directly or through a diminutive form from the medieval personal name Toma, itself a variant of Tommaso. This name is an Italian adaptation of the Byzantine Thomàs. Historical evidence from a 1500 document in Solofra (Avellino) confirms the use of Toma in southern Italy during that period.
