Origin notes

Origin and meaning

The surname Tonello is characteristic of the Veneto–Friuli area. Like several related forms, it most likely comes from the apheresis, sometimes with dialectal changes, of the personal name Antonio; in some cases, an origin from the Romanian or Slavic name Anton cannot be excluded. Within this family of surnames, Tonello stands apart from the more widespread Tonelli and Tonini, while it is closer in formation and geographic context to Tonon and Tonetto. For Tonon, a separate family tradition also points to a Savoia origin and to the town of Thonon in Upper Savoy, but that explanation applies only to that specific branch and not to the surname group as a whole.
