Traversa Surname in Italy

The surname Traversa is primarily rooted in Northern Italy, especially in Liguria and Piedmont, with significant branches also in Puglia, particularly around Bari, and the Naples area. Its distribution across Italy is patchy and can be linked to multiple origins: beside the North, there are historical clusters in Milan, Florence, Rome, and Foggia. The surname has diverse origins, commonly derived either from nicknames, place names such as the locality of Traversa near Florence, or the medieval given name Traversus, which is also the source of the surname Traverso. Historical records from the 17th century mention individuals with the name Traversus, like Giovanni Andrea Traversus, a valley captain in Valtellina. In Puglia, notably in Bari, there was a notable shift of the surname D'Aversa into Traversa around the 1600s, likely resulting from scribal changes, leading to the disappearance of D’Aversa while Traversa became prevalent. This transition established a prominent Traversa family with well-documented origins dating back to the early 17th century.
