Vannucci Surname in Italy

Surnames such as Vanna, which is very rare, appear in small clusters in the Verona and Bari areas. Vannella is typically Apulian, especially in the provinces of Barletta, Brindisi, and Foggia. Vannetta is almost unique, while Vannetti is distinctly Tuscan, found in Florence and Colle di Val d'Elsa. Vanni is characteristic of Tuscany but also present throughout central Italy and eastern Liguria. Vannicelli, quite rare, occurs mainly between Perugia, Rieti, and Rome. Vannini is more specifically Tuscan and Emiliano, whereas Vannino is nearly unique and likely results from transcription errors. Vannucchi is typically Tuscan, concentrated in Lucca, Pistoia, Prato, and Florence. The surname Vannucci is also Tuscan, with a significant branch in the Rimini area. Vannuccini is mostly found between Arezzo and Siena, and Vannuzzi is specific to Siena and Florence. All these names originate, directly or via diminutives, from the aphesis of the given names Giovanni or Giovanna. This onomastic pattern dates back to at least the late 14th century, evidenced by the Sienese painter Francesco di Vannuccio. Among the most notable bearers is Pietro di Cristoforo Vannucci, known as il Perugino, born in Città della Pieve during the 15th century.
