Vecchi Surname in Italy

Vecchi is a surname of nickname origin, formed from the medieval adjective or personal name Vecchio, given to identify the older of two people with the same name or a senior relative within the family. This was a widespread naming practice in Italy and across Europe, and it appears in medieval documentation in forms such as Vetulus. The surname is especially well established in the Modenese area, together with related forms such as Vecchio, Vecchiati, Vecchietti and Vecchiè. Its core meaning is therefore “the older one,” rather than a generic description of age. In southern Italy, however, Vecchio can in some cases conceal a different origin: it may reflect Albanian or Greek-Albanian surnames, or more rarely an Iberian or Sephardic background. In Arbëreshë contexts it may translate Plaku, or the Greek names Yeros and Paleos. In individual cases, a connection with Del Vecchio families of older Jewish tradition is also possible.
