Origin notes

Origin and meaning

The surname Venditti is widely spread across Lazio, Abruzzo, and Molise, as well as in the provinces of Caserta and Naples. The variant Vendittis is almost exclusively found in the area between the provinces of Latina and Caserta, while Venditto, rarer, has two main clusters in Rome and between Caserta and Naples. The very rare form Vendittozzi is limited to Rome and Nettuno. These surnames originate, either directly or through diminutives, from dialectal adaptations of the Latin name Benedictus, which evolved first into Bendictus, then through the linguistic phenomenon of betacism to Vendictus, and finally into the Italian form Venditto.
