Origin notes

Origin and meaning

The surname Venturi most likely comes, either directly or through diminutive and hypocoristic forms, from the medieval apocope of Bonaventura. It may also derive from the medieval personal name Ventura, originally used as a good-luck name meaning “favorable fortune.” Historical records show early medieval use of Ventura in Lombardy, Liguria and Tuscany between the 12th and 14th centuries. Venturi and Venturini are generally characteristic of north-central Italy; Venturini also has a significant Friulian development, where several families descend from men named Venturinus or Vinturinus who arrived from Lombardy in the 13th–14th centuries in the entourage of Patriarch Raimondo della Torre. Related surnames such as Ventura, Venturella, Venturelli, Venturello, Venturin, Venturino and Venturoli developed along parallel local lines, with distinct regional distributions.
